Urban Japanese rooftop garden
Gardening is something that has long been a part of Japanese life. Growing plants on rooftops, verandas and any open space available. Here the traditional values of horticulture has been combined with modern living and high above the landscape of this urban metropolis a landscape of living vegetation & Eastern charm has been created. Open space is a premium within any city so this Japanese rooftop garden brings an oasis of Eastern tranquility and vibrant colour as it sits high amonst the skyscrapers. Mixing modern & traditional this garden has two seating areas, raised beds, water feature and plenty of leafy indigenous planting.
I have included this living room area as part of the design to illustrate how the garen looks from inside the home.
The interior of this home is subtle with just an infusion of pink to echo the pink tones and blossoms of the exterior.
The garden acts as a living backdrop to this living room window.
The interior of this home is simple and gentle deliberately not detracting from the beauty of the outside space.
Bifold doors open to the gardens different areas.
The garden has different sections ,this one with a slight raised area, traditional low level seating and ornate garden ornamentation amongst the rockery.
The garden has accents of pink acting as a soft contrast to the polished back jet tiles and ties in with the planting of ornate blossom trees. So beloved and traditional of Japanese gardens.
The chrome finish of some items and the foliage reflects the neon lights of the surrounding city .
Another section has an ornate water feature against one wall.
The garden is a jewel box of colour.
Traditional Japense painting techniques are stencilled on several of the exterior walls.
Traditional screens as well as mostly native plants have been used to add authenticity and instil the time honored appearance of Japanese outdoor spaces.
I love how the city lights transform this foliage.
The raised boxed areas were chosen to promote a formal look and create height and structural interest.
Bonsai, blossoms and a collection of Asian inspired items have been handpicked to ensure this garden stays true to the Japanese theme.
