While looking at videos of micro apartments w/no bathroom but it is down the hall... A communal apartment in 1917 was the same concept except there was also a shared kitchen and living room of sorts besides a shared bathroom. It basically was meant to take a large house and divide the rooms into sleeping areas for multiple people. The dorm room experience but with family. some families had a 15x21 or 18x? but most were 14 or 15X 9,10.12. The smallest I have found was an 8x14 Kommunalka. Micro apartments in NY are not new but most lack a commons area and communal kitchen very few do.
