Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. 2 Kings 6:16 Overnight, the Syrian army has surrounded the city of Dothan to capture Elisha. When the servant of the man of God wakes up in the morning, he sees the foreign army. He is frightened and cries out, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15). It is also the case in our lives that we can be suddenly faced with a big problem. Overnight, so to speak, we are confronted with something that frightens us and completely overwhelms us. Then we ask ourselves: What should we do now? The first thing Elisha does is to encourage his frightened servant: “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” We also experience this in difficulties. The Lord gives us new courage by reminding us of the realities of faith through His Word: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31); “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Secondly, Elisha prays for his servant, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see” (2 Kings 6:17). God hears this request and opens the servant’s eyes. Now he sees that the mountain around Elisha is full of fiery horses and chariots. This is how the Lord wants to open our eyes of faith in our problems, so that we may recognise Him and His help. He who has all authority in heaven and on earth surrounds and protects us every day (Matthew 28:18–20).
